Happy New Year Everyone!!!
2018 has been awesome year for me.. became certified Yoga Teacher.. travelled twice halfway through the Glob.. made new friends along the way... high school reunion.. and so on... All those travels with limited weight and baggage made me think of why do we carry so much stuff with us?.. is that really needed?... Light weight travel is definitely on my radar.. :-) If we think life journey is a trip, what baggage are we carrying?.. how long are we carrying them?.. do these bags still serve the purpose?.. and most importantly who packed these bags for us?.. do we need to repack them?.. and that exactly is my 2019's (and future years) resolution.. want to travel light in every coming years, so I can use my energy wisely..
My Yoga Teacher told me a story of two Zen monks, who were walking along a country road that had become extremely muddy after heavy rains.. Near a village, they met a young woman who was trying to cross the road.. but the mud was so deep.. so she asked the monks if they could help her cross to the road.
The two monks glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman. Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the road, set her down at the safe place and carried on with his journey. The younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. Five hours later, finally the younger monk blurted out “As monks, we are not permitted to touch a woman, then how could you carry that woman on your shoulders?”
The older monk looked at him and replied, “I set her down on the road while ago, why are you still carrying her?”
This simple Zen story has a beautiful message about living in the present moment. How often do we carry around past hurts, grudges, fears, exceptions, guilts, disappointments, angers, believes???.. Everyone of us has our so called "Baggage" to sort and eventually let go of... so we can step into the expression of who we are.. step into true version of ourselves. Sometimes our baggage can feel fairly heavy.. but thats okay only when you know how to sort and when to let that go..
We need to take a look at our precious cargo space.. Considering whether we are carrying around something that doesn’t belong to us... Are we living according to someone else’s belief systems rather than living with our true self? The more we carry around other people’s baggage and live our life through the lens of someone else’s beliefs, the more we loose sight of ourself... Focus on our own baggage and put everyone else’s down. As we do so.. we will discover more space for our own dreams and a broader understanding of it..
Let’s step into 2019 with light baggage!!
